Digital Design and Visualization I - Language of Design

This course introduces the student to the language of design industries:  technical illustration.  Students will have the opportunity to study and prepare various types of sketches and drawings.  Through the application of these experiences, each student will develop a portfolio that includes graphic representations of both spaces and objects.

During the course the students will be situated in the roles of various types of draftspersons.  At times, they will simulate the role of an engineering draftsperson.  In this capacity, they will utilize analytic technique to evaluate and prepare various types of shop drawings.  At other times, they will simulate the role of an architectural draftsperson working at a design firm.  During those simulations, they will produce architectural drawings.

As a final project, students will be given a ‘promotion’.  In their new role as a project manager, they will be asked to develop an unrefined ‘napkin sketch’ concept given to them by their firm’s design principal.  The project will culminate in a design review where these students will present their projects to a panel of jurors.
