Platform: 3DS Max // HAVOK physics engine
This reverse engineering assignment required students to analyze and model a project from DaVinci’s notebooks.
When some students used a video game physics engine to simulate the mechanisms, a really interesting thing happened: They all broke!
Some further research revealed that DaVinci had ‘intellectual property’ safeguards in his drawings. If you built these things exactly as they were depicted, they were designed to fail! After they made the necessary corrections, the mechanisms behaved as expected.
