Platform: SolidWorks // Shapeways
This project started with an activity where the class used AutoCAD’s parametric constraint tools to build a diagrammatic simulation of a Strandbeest leg linkage. This inspired one of the students to improve upon a design for a Strandbeest model that he found online. The project that he found cost upwards of $100 to print via Shapeways. I agreed to fund his prototype out of pocket, but the budget would be limited to $40.
The student used SolidWorks to create a virtual prototype for mechanical simulation. He designed constraints and relationships that allowed him to rapidly produce multiple iterations of the project while maintaining minimum clearances among the parts and joints. We used Shapeways to print the assembled model shown in the video clip.
