Platform: SolidWorks // MakerBot
During our introductory engineering modeling unit, students learn how to use SolidWorks to model a V12 engine. One of our students was interested in testing the limits of our new MakerBot, and this project turned out to be the perfect case study.
Because the engine was modeled parametrically, it was relatively simple to generate a variant at a scale and level of abstraction that was appropriate for our MakerBot. Our student printed the required parts and devised a strategy to assemble them. The resulting model’s crank turns when pressure is applied to the pistons in succession.
